Energy is universal: it is part of us, it surrounds us, it is here, there, and everywhere. Energy has been known about since the beginning of time and has been studied for almost as long. All energy is connected in one way or another. A balance of energy is the perfect harmony of all things. The yin and yang is an example of perfect balance and harmony. Balance is what the universe strives for.

Energy work is all about working with a person’s energy. The Energy Worker encourages the client’s energy to follow through their body, helping it to maintain their homeostasis, which keeps them healthy and happy. Everyday life, traumas, issues in our tissues can all block or slow down our flow of energy. When our flow of energy is disrupted disease can and will eventually transpire. Cyndi Dale author of The Subtle Body an Encyclopedia of Your Energetic Anatomy “all diseases are energetic or related to the flow of energy”. (p.xxxi) Energy work has been around for thousands of years across the globe. There are many different techniques and names. No matter the technique or name the principles are basically the same. ‘To enhance energy flow for balance and harmony’. Cyndi Dale explains “disease is caused by energetic imbalances: therefore health can be restored by balancing one’s energies“. (p.xxxi)

Energy Work can help whether the client believes in it or not. Energy is intelligent, it knows what to do and how to do it, it just needs a little push sometimes. Like everything else in life it just needs a little help to get going. In almost all energy techniques, working with the Chakras is an essential part of the work. Chakra, the Human Aura, Craniosacral, Reiki, and Polarity are some of the techniques we are going to explore.

Chakras are Sanskrit word for “wheel of light’ according to (Energy Work). It is believed that the human body has 7 main Chakras and according to Barbara Brennan author of Hands of Light there are21 minor Chakras” (p.44). The 7 main chakras start with the Root, which starts at your feet, up to your pelvic area. The next six Chakras continue up the spine ending at the head. After the Root you have the Sacral, the Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and the Crown.

To learn more about Chakras and their function, see my post on Chakras!!

Each Chakra has its own job to do. It has organs to protect emotions to process and maintain. Each Chakra is an essential functioning energy, with its own set of duties to perform to enhance the overall health of the body. All seven Chakras have a color associated with it. Opening up these little energy wheels of life is essential to achieving balance and harmony in our bodies. This why almost all Energy Work, works with this area of the body.

According to,” there are Chakras in our palms; these are known to help the therapist transmit healing energy to the Client”

” If you are left handed, then your right hand Chakra pulls in the energy and the left hand Chakra sends it out, and vice versa” (Para. 2).

Along with the Chakra’s there is what is known as the Aura or Aura field. The Aura is an energy field that surrounds the body. According to Barbara Brennan” the human aura field has seven layers surrounding the body each layer a different color and each layer is associated with one of the seven Chakras” (p. 43) “The Aura is believed to be a materialization of all the universal energy that intimately involved with human life” (p. 41). Brennan believes that learning to understand our physical symptoms and can relate them to the location of our Aura or Chakra, can help us with understand the nature of different illnesses, this giving us a fighting chance. “Thus the study of the Aura can be a bridge between traditional medicine and our psychological concerns” (p. 43)

Craniosacral is a technique that does not work directly with each Chakra, instead it works with the cranial, the sacrum and the cerebral spinal fluid. The area that is the focus in Craniosacral work is the same area that the 7 major Chakras are located. In Craniosacral therapy the therapist places their hands very lightly on the clients head (cranial), sacrum, then the cranial and sacrum together, ending with the cranial. The overall reason is to help the body find balance, to unblock areas that are block, thus helping the body help itself.

To learn about Craniosacral you can check out my post on Craniosacral Therapy!!

The human body is amazing; it wants to be healthy and therefore happy. It strives for balance; with a little help the body can repair many things that need repairing. The ancient Chinese believed that everything works together as one. No entity along could thrive by itself. It needs the surrounding environment to make it complete. This is how the yin/yang came about. You cannot have Yin without Yang, nor Yang without Yin. Ancient Chinese believed that “Yin is earth energy” that is nurturing of the sacrum, while “Yang is Heaven energy” that is nurturing of the cranium (Shennong para. 4). We can see why the area between the pelvic bone and the head is such an important area of our bodies.

“Oh and this area houses all of our major organs”

Reiki comes from two Japanese words. Rei which means “God wisdom or Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. Reiki is “spiritually force energy” (reiki, para 2).

Reiki is known to treat the whole body, emotions, mind and spirit.

A Reiki session gives the client a feeling of balance and harmony. Anyone can learn to perform Reiki, it has a spiritual aspect, but it is not a religion. Reiki is a natural way of helping the body’s energies, bring health and wellness to the whole body. It has been said that “Reiki healing is a pure energy form. When it is combined with the sincere desire of the healer, who is willing to effect a cleansing within their emotional and spiritual consciousness, a total healing can occur” (RHHB,para 1).

According to Cyndi Dale, Reiki system draws on Chakra knowledge as well as specific symbols. Through the Reiki training you begin to learn about the use of the different symbols. The symbols are “considered sacred” (p. 391).

Polarity Therapy is also energy work, but its techniques are a bit different than a lot of other forms of energy work.

With Polarity it is believe that the TOP RIGHT SIDE of our bodies has a POSITIVE charge and the BOTTOM LEFT SIDE has a NEGATIVE charge.

Polarity Therapy consists of stimulating different areas, then holding and feeling the energy. Other techniques used with Polarity Therapy are rocking the body, cranial holds ( polarity therapy).

You are to be using both hands always, one is to be stationed and the other active. It is believed that energy work can depend on the therapist. If the therapist has any negative energy flowing through their bodies and they do not ground themselves the negative energy can and will flow into the clients, leaving the energy session a total failure (Polarity Therapy general session).

Life Force Energy,

also known as “Ki, God, Buddha, Chi, Qi, Prana, Love energy”.

All of these relate to the “superior, all encompassing cosmic energy from which all other minor energies in the universe draw their power from”(RHHB para. 4).

When I first began writing this paper I had no clue of all the different kinds of energy work that was out there. I found myself overwhelmed at times, but very intrigued and fascinated. I am still new to my field of study, but so far I have learned that energy work is important, maybe as important as massaging the muscles.

If anyone has any more to add please do. I would love to learn more. Also I would love to hear what others think about Energy Work.
